04 — The Loop Expansion
Build a full arrangement by expanding and reshaping a dense starting loop.
Structure
intro → loop A → loop B → break → loop C → outro
Section lengths are your choice. The goal is to reveal the loop gradually.
Core Constraints
- Start with a complete loop (4 to 8 bars) containing: kick, snare or clap, hi-hat, percussion, bassline, chord layer (pad or rhythmic chord), melody and/or arp.
- Don't create new musical ideas after the loop exists.
- You may: remove elements, automate intensity, vary rhythm or density, filter or process sounds.
- Maximum active elements at once: 6
Arrangement
Loop Creation
Build a loop where all parts work together rhythmically and harmonically. This is the most complex moment of the track.
Intro
Strip the loop down to the minimum elements needed to start the track. Gradually introduce percussion and rhythmic hints.
Loop A
Introduce the groove without revealing everything. Hold back at least one key element (melody, chords, or percussion).
Loop B
Reveal the full loop or something very close to it. Use small variations or automation to keep movement.
Break
Remove drums and reduce the track to one or two musical elements. Use filtering, delay, or automation to create tension.
Loop C
Return to the groove with full energy. Consider subtle variations or automation to keep it evolving.
Outro
Remove elements gradually until the track resolves or fades. Leave enough to maintain the rhythm to the end.
Session Plan
Work in 3 to 5 defined sessions. Define the goal before starting. Stop when the goal is complete. Stand up and step away before beginning another session. Back-to-back sessions are fine. Breaks are required.
Wildcards
Mute one percussion element for an entire section
Reverse one element and see if it creates an interesting transition
Double the rhythmic density of one percussion layer in a section later in the track
Caveat — If deviation improves momentum and doesn’t stall progress, commit to it.
Finish the full arrangement before judging.
It doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be finished.
