03 — The Groove Builder
Build a groove-driven track where energy rises through arrangement and percussion rather than new musical ideas.
Structure
intro → groove → groove+ → break → build → drop → outro
Section lengths are your choice.
Core Constraints
- Start with a steady rhythmic foundation.
- At minimum the track should contain: kick, bass, and 1 rhythmic or harmonic element
- Let there be a core rhythmic anchor that’s present for most of the track.
- Don't introduce more than one new musical idea after the groove is established.
- Energy should come from: percussion layers, automation and filter changes
- Maximum active elements at once: 6
Arrangement
Intro
Kick and minimal groove elements. Introduce additional percussion gradually.
Groove
Introduce the main bass pattern and core rhythmic elements.
Groove+
Add supporting percussion, chord stabs, or rhythmic synth elements. Focus on locking the groove, not adding new melodies.
Break
Remove the kick and reduce the track to a few core elements. Let tension build through filtering, delay, or automation.
Build
Gradually reintroduce rhythmic energy. Use risers, percussion, or automation.
Drop
Full groove returns. All main elements present.
Outro
Remove elements gradually while maintaining the groove.
Session Plan
Work in 3 to 5 defined sessions. Define the goal before starting. Stop when the goal is complete. Stand up and step away before beginning another session. Back-to-back sessions are fine. Breaks are required.
Wildcards
Remove kick and bass together for more than one bar (try someplace unobvious)
Add a completely new percussion layer only in the drop
Automate a filter across an entire section
Caveat — If deviation improves momentum and doesn’t stall progress, commit to it.
Finish the full arrangement before judging.
It doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be finished.
